What is a Passive House?

This definition is taken from the Passive House Institute US web page.

"A Passive House is a very well-insulated, virtually air-tight building that is primarily heated by passive solar gain and by internal gains from people, electrical equipment, etc. Energy losses are minimized. Any remaining heat demand is provided by an extremely small source. Avoidance of heat gain through shading and window orientation also helps to limit any cooling load, which is similarly minimized. An energy recovery ventilator provides a constant, balanced fresh air supply. The result is an impressive system that not only saves up to 90% of space heating costs, but also provides a uniquely terrific indoor air quality."

15th Post – Meetings

We have figured out how to move forward and are on to the next step.  The bids are coming in and the plans are done.  We meet this week with a builder and are bringing the plans to the city of West Linn.  We are wondering how the city will react to the passive house plans. The city said we needed to have data and information on how the house is to meet the code that it needs to be 68 degrees without a conventional HVAC system.  Ted Nickell will have some teaching to do, but this is not unfamiliar territory.  We have confidence that he will present the needed information to secure approval.  We should have news soon when we may start!

14th Post – Another Passive House?

Well, we have decided to sell or build another passive house on the lot in the front of our property.  It is a flat lot in West Linn, OR (which is rare).  We are 1 ½ blocks away from Sunset grade school and park, plus ½ block from middle and high school bus stops, by the way they’re great schools!  My husband rides his bicycle to work almost everyday.  We also have a great garden.  Sounds inviting…contact us at email; Kugler@hevanet.com   Subject-building.
